back on the road: 1

We loaded up the car to capacity (a little too Beverly Hillbillies for Steve, but what can ya can do, we have a lot of stuff), and hit the road around 8:30 this morning. We left the tollway behind and coasted into Iowa, a place Steve had never been.

We stopped in Iowa City for both an early lunch and also a bit of nostalgia for me. In an hour I dragged Steve to my favorite Indian restaurant (Masala), bookstore (Prairie Lights), and coffee house (The Java House). I was pleased that most of my haunts were still there, and Steve did a great job pretending to be excited to visit each and every one of 'em.

If, like Steve, you've never driven across the state of Iowan this is a sample of what you see along the way:

We were psyched to cross into our third state of the day

and set about finding our Marriott in Lincoln. It's a Residence Inn, and between the fireplace and this kitchen

we're definitely making ourselves at home.

It should come as no surprise to anyone reading this blog that I have done extensive research on places to eat while we're on the road. Tonight we headed downtown to the Haymarket, a cool warehouse district full of restaurants and bar,

to eat dinner at Bread and Cup. How to describe...an upscale bakery? It was pizza night, so in addition to their sandwiches they also had several pizzas on offer.

Tomorrow we're off to Denver, another seven hours on the road.
